The Aesthetics Update is a free update released for Super Mario Maker 2 for the Nintendo Switch. The update largely focuses on giving the player greater control over the aesthetic design of their levels. It was released on July 17, 2022 as Version 4.0.0.

Course Maker[]
Background Tool[]
The Background Tool allows players to edit background elements. It also allows them to change the look of a course. Changing a course's look will only affect the course's visuals and audio, it does not affect gameplay nor the available features of a theme. Each theme has different available backgrounds, listed below:

Palette Customizer[]
The Palette Customizer is available to all players who've beaten the story mode campaign. When unlocked, it can be accessed from the Background Tool menu. It allows players to change the color palette of individual course parts, but is only available in the Super Mario Bros. game style.
